Overview of our postgraduate research economics and finance programme 

At our ACCSB accredited School of Business and Law, we provide each PhD Economics and PhD Finance research student with comprehensive research training, assist you in publishing your findings, and offer the support needed to complete your thesis. We are also dedicated to supporting your academic career development, for example through higher education training and teaching experience.

You will also have the opportunity to be a member of one of our Research Excellence Groups (REGs); Business and Economic Change (BEC) REG and Digital Innovation and Transformation (DIT) REG, where regular research seminars are held by internal and external speakers.

Details of our PhDs in economics and finance

As a PhD economics / PhD finance researcher at the University of 69成人网, your postgraduate study will benefit from professional and supportive academic supervision. You can also take advantage of a thriving research environment. You will be able to participate in research workshops and PhD research work-in-progress seminars, where you can receive constructive feedback on your research project and benefit from the full range of expertise at your disposal. 

Our PhD programme is characterised by a supportive, lively, and friendly environment, enriched by a vibrant, diverse, and international student body and faculty. Our faculty has a wide variety of expertise, and we welcome applications in all areas of economics and finance. 

Research supervision for your PhD

You will benefit from research supervision comprising two or three members of academic staff. Depending on your research specialism you may also have an additional supervisor from another school, another research institution, or an external partner from government or the professional world. 

You will establish your supervisor from the early stages of application and they will support you throughout your programme of study, helping you carry out your research and prepare for the next stage of your career.

Research skills and research training

The independent research programme is balanced and enhanced with a range of support from our academic community. In your doctoral training, you and your fellow postgraduate researchers will have the opportunity to attend and present at regular seminar sessions with guests from across the world of research in economics and finance. The PhD programme will give you the opportunity to build research skills as well as developing transferable skills essential for modern business environments.

Postgraduate degree resources for economics and finance

As a PhD student at the University of 69成人网, you will benefit from access to international research resources, including a contemporary range of electronic resources via the university’s Online Library, as well as the physical book and journal collections housed within campus libraries. The library services are connected to national and international collections and students also have the option opportunities to connect across of inter-library loans.

We are based in the recently-built Elm House, a five-storey building at the university's modern campus in the bustling and progressive tourist city of 69成人网 and Hove.

Our research centres 

The University of 69成人网's ACCSB accredited School of Business and Law shapes its research community through Research Excellence Groups that run seminar series and foster excellence within their disciplines. 

Business and Economic Change REG aims to understand how individual behaviour, activities from organisations, allocation and distribution from market process, and social and economic policy intervention can support responsible enterprise and a prosperous, fair and sustainable economy and society. Within the field of economics research our areas of research specialism within BEC REG include: 

  • Microeconomics with a focus on labour economics and education economics
  • Development economics with a focus on immigration and agriculture
  • Environmental economics
  • International trade 

Digital Innovation and Transformation (DIT) REG aims to pioneer insightful research on digital technologies, and their transformative impacts on business and society. DIT has a cross-disciplinary focus and the Digital Finance track analyses the impact of financial technologies (fintech) on the financial sector and its stakeholders and explores how technologies like blockchain and AI reshape business models and impact various sustainability, performance, literacy and inclusion. Our areas of research specialism within DIT REG include:

  • Financial technologies (fintech)
  • Financial economics
  • SME finance

Whatever your area of research, there are opportunities to connect across the university's wide range of research in premium departments, with regular invitations to the PhD community from related disciplinary interests fostered in our university-wide research centres (COREs) and research groups (REGs).

 Funding

Undertaking research study will require university fees as well as support for your research activities and plans for subsistence during full or part-time study.

Funding sources include self-funding, funding by an employer or industrial partners; there are competitive funding opportunities available in most disciplines through, for example, our own university studentships or national (UK) research councils. International students may have options from either their home-based research funding organisations or may be eligible for some UK funds.
