Initial teacher training courses

All students taking an initial teacher training course, such as a PGCE or a BA(Hons) with QTS, need to satisfy the academic requirements we set for our courses and the entry requirements and conditions determined by the government.

The selection process for all initial teacher training courses includes an interview.

Confirm you meet the entry requirements

You can use our course finder to confirm what the standard academic entry requirements are for all our courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).

All applicants for these courses must hold a GCSE at a minimum grade C or 4 in both mathematics and English language. Applicants for primary and early years courses must also have a GCSE science at a minimum of grade C or 4.

If you do not have the required GCSEs, find out which equivalent qualifications we accept instead.

Some courses may have additional GCSE requirements.

You must also be able to read effectively and communicate clearly in spoken and written standard English.

All initial teacher education course offers are subject to:

  • an occupational health check
  • a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure check.
